Congratulations to the U-13 and U-14 Flames!

Both the U-13 and U-14 Girls teams won the Randy Rawls Sportsmanship Award for the 2008 Spring Season! This is a great honor for the teams!

Each season the coaches in the ODSL vote for a team in their division which exhibits the best sportsmanship. In addition to the coaches votes, sportsmanship points are averaged from each referee report card.  Also, points are subtracted for yellow and red cards accumulated during the season. The prestigious award is named after Randy Rawls, one of the leagues original founders and its first President.  The award honors the winner’s sense of fair play, something for which Randy was renowned as he sought to bring soccer opportunities to the youth of Northern Virginia.  Randy has since retired to Florida where he authors detective mystery books www.randyrawls.com

The U-13 Flames finished as finalists in the 2007 Hunt Country Classic! The girls achievement was reported in the Daily Progress:

MonU girls take 2nd in Fauquier Co. (Link to Article)

The Monticello United Soccer Club U-13 Flames captured second-place honors in the Fauquier County Hunt Country Classic soccer tournament.

After a convincing 3-0 win over Braddock Roads and a hard-fought 1-0 loss to Chantilly, the girls were primed and ready for their semifinal match on Sunday morning versus the Clarke County Chicks.

Despite losing to the Chicks twice in Old Dominion Soccer League play, MonU exacted its revenge with a 2-1 victory in double overtime.

MonU struck first as Jordan Kinlaw scored off an indirect kick from Abby Schwab in the first half to give the Flames a 1-0 lead.

Shortly thereafter, Clarke County tied the score at 1-1, and for the rest of the game both teams fought for the go-ahead goal. Despite numerous chances resulting from accurate passing and smart offensive plays by Darby Conner, Callie Murray, McKenna Rohm, Ciera Ulan, and Aimee Moody, MonU could not muster another goal during regulation.

That left the game deadlocked at 1-1. The defense of Sam Vidovich, Sadie Mackay, Sam Moore, Allison Huschke, Kate Duggan and Emily Evans, as well as outstanding goalkeeping from Josie Rappold and Kali Carroll kept the Clarke County squad scoreless after the early goal.

With just 30 seconds left in the second overtime, Brianna Carel finished off a cross from Kendall Coffman to give MonU a victory and a trip to the final.

In the title game, MonU lost, 3-1, in a rematch with Chantilly.
